Do's

Keep a professional distance. It will avoid misunderstandings and prevent unnecessary assumptions.

It is recommended to pay for medical tests before employing them, although not required.

If the employee proves to be trustworthy you can give her some presents to assist with personal needs such as clothing, medical expenses, food, etc.

Give clear and simple explanations and monitor closely for a few days or until you are satisfied with their performance.

Make clear what detergents they should use and how (bleach when doing the laundry, for example, tends to be overused by most of them)

Set clear specific rules for using the telephone, arriving and leaving time (for commuters) and requesting special permits for personal errands.

Be flexible and consider your priorities. Do not seek for perfection but for your most important needs fulfillment.

Keep a photocopy of their Cédula (Dominican legal ID card) and write down their address, telephone number and where they can be contacted on days off.

Determine a schedule for eating and cooking in your home. Specify cooking time and eating habits for them. Such as breakfast time, lunch and dinner, when and what.

Don'ts

Don't take for granted that maids know how to use all appliances in your house. Explain their operation simply and clearly.

Don't allow them to receive collect phone calls.

Do not hire a person without recommendation. Always ask for references. The best is to hire personnel that have been referred by someone you know and trust.

Don't leave money, valuable jewelry or important documents (passports, tiles, and so on) out in the open. Keep them locked and safe. It is better to prevent than to solve the matter.

Don't allow your maid to invite her friends or family into your home when you are out.

Don't give your maid advance notice when you fire her. You should first collect the keys and then settle the payment until the end of the month. Have her to leave quickly.
