In the Dominican Republic it is common and affordable to hire domestic employees. Shores tend to be more tedious around the house because of the tropical weather and humidity. Also windows are frequently kept opened and furnishings usually get dustier. Sometimes it is necessary to hire more than one maid to do different shores such as cleaning, the laundry and ironing, child care, and cooking.

The best way to find a good responsible maid is through personal recommendation. Some maids are hired "con dormida" which means that they will sleep in the maids' room and work 6 days a week.

Payment:

The maid's salary will depend on several issues such as responsibilities (shores, cooking, child care, etc.), schedule (part time, on live-in or commute basis, because if she has to commute every day transportation cost have to be considered) and most importantly the experience and previous salary of the applicant. Inquire about their previous salary before making an offer. Ask for reference on their performance.

However, the average salary a maid earns is anywhere from RD$5,000.00 for basic housekeeping and from RD$7,000 for an employee who do child care. By law maids get two weeks paid vacation and an extra bonus salary on Christmas per year.

Keep in mind

Maids' formal educational levels are usually very basic, if any. Some can't read well or can't read at all.

Many enjoy watching television and listening to the radio. To avoid inconveniences some employers provide them with an older TV or radio set to keep their valuable equipments off possible mishandles.
