Before startingthe venture of a new business, make the necessary research to confirm whether or not your idea has possibilities in this country. You can test the market by doing business informally and then incorporate.

A good starting point is reviewing the Labor Code in order to become familiar with general labor laws, as they differ considerably from those abroad. It is recommended to observe and strictly adhere to the laws.

We are hereby providing a brief of the general procedure to start a new business in the Dominican Republic.

Starting a business

• Check the company name.

• Purchase the name and register your trademark/brand.

You will need the assistance of a professional lawyer or firm to help you with the paperwork. Corporate names could be purchased over the internet at www.creatuempresa.gob.do, until June 19, 2009. They are working to continue offering the online service. Check the website for updated information.

The process of registering your company can take from 8 weeks to two months.

You'll need an accountant, experienced in fiscal laws, to properly keep your company's books in accordance with the Dominican's Registro Nacional de Contribuyentes. The accountant will also help you manage labor affairs. You can hire a full time accountant or a consultant that will visit your company several days per month.
