In the Dominican Republic Driving is carried out on the right hand side. In the cities, speed limit is 60 km. p/h (37mph). On the highways it's generally up to 100 km. p/h (62.14 mph); although many drivers enjoy going at a speed of 120 km. p/h (74mph); be careful.

Traffic laws are similar to the system used in the United States; nevertheless traffic control is not always efficient and it is common to find traffic jams caused by indiscipline drivers. The metropolitan police may carry out road checking routines once in a while, causing the traffic to stop temporarily, usually to check whether the drivers have their documentation complete or not.

Police officers called AMET are in charge of regulating urban transportation and belong to the Autoridad Metropolitana de Transporte (transportation metropolitan authority). If you are stopped by an Amet it is advisable to be very careful with bribes and preferably not to offer any, follow the instruction of the police officer and call for advice local people of your trust.

Seat belts are obligatory by law, but this law is generally overlooked. Driving under the influence of alcohol becomes a major issue if one gets involved in accidents resulting injury or death, as it will imply high penalties.

Transit of motorcycles may seem peculiar and unorganized. Helmets are mandatory; however this law is often not enforced.
