  Rules   Roads   >Tips

· Driving may seem aggressive and indiscipline to foreigners. Be careful until you get used to it. Take your time and give other drivers some space. Defensive driving is recommendable at all times.

· Keep your documents up to date and carry photocopies of your cédula or passport, car's registration, insurance and driver's license, in case you are stopped by an officer.

· Larger vehicles rule the road, period.

· Maintain a considerable distance from large vehicles loaded with agricultural products, construction material or other heavy loads.

· Avoid driving at night especially on the highways. Vehicles are often driven at high speeds, sometimes with broken headlights and many people use main beam at night.

· Be careful turning right on red light. It is permitted but it's better to do it with caution.

· During election campaigns, traffic jams become the common denominator. Be patient.

· Take special care when driving in the rain and do not go across big puddles of rain until you see other vehicles go through successfully.

· Avoid driving on highways until you have become familiar with the rules and the roads. On the highways driving seems wilder than in the cities.

· If there is a police officer directing the traffic, traffic lights are ignored. Don't think that you have green light to continue, or that because light is red you can't go on. Follow the officer's instructions and don't get impatient watching the lights.

· Be cautious if traffic lights are not working.
