/ Education

The school year, similar to the system used in the United States, runs from August to June and the language of instruction is Spanish. Many private schools offer bilingual education.

Education is free for children ages 7 to 17 and is compulsory through age 12. It is comprised of:

· Primary school for children ages 7 to 14

· Secondary school, which is further divided into:

- Intermediate school for children ages 14 to 16. Study can be academic, technical or vocational.

- Secondary school for children ages 16 to 20. Study can be academic, technical or vocational.

- Under the reform system, secondary school consists of:

1. Basic secondary school for children ages 14 to 18. Education is primarily geared towards the sciences.

2. Upper secondary school for children ages 18 to 20. Education may include more specialized studies.

There is a wide range of private schools which offer high quality education and a wide range of international options, displaying the customs and values of foreign cultures. In this regard we can mention French, Japanese, English, Spanish and Italian schools, among other educational systems. Additionally, these private institutions offer interesting extracurricular and sportive activities.

Before a student starts taking classes: he/she must complete the registration process that includes the payment of enrollment fee, the school uniform (obligatory in all schools), and other requirements, specific to each institution.

Higher education

There are also private universities that have an excellent reputation, such as Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCAMM), Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), Universidad Acción Pro Educación y Cultura (UNAPEC), and the state university "Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo" that descended directly from the Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino (first university of the New World), just to mention the main institutions in the National District.
