Getting Divorced In the Dominican Republic there are two way for getting divorced: Traditional divorces are available to Dominican couples. Fast divorces under the Special Divorce Legislation are available to foreigners, to Dominicans married to foreigners or to Dominicans whom are no longer residents of the Dominican Republic. Fast divorces take only one day. They are easily handled and are recognized in many countries around the world. You should confirm with an Attorney/Notary where you reside to ensure that Dominican special divorce is recognized by the authorities. Once you are certain, at least one of the spouses has to appear in court in the Dominican Republic. Special divorcers are only carried out in Santo Domingo, the capital city. It is a requisite that both spouses agree to the divorce. The spouse or couple (if both decide to come to the country) will need a Dominican lawyer to represent them. After the divorce is completed, the Oficialía registers the divorce and this process may take 10-12 days. The final documents are sent by courier to the client.  |
